Sleep Debt Calculator

Enter what you slept each night and the sleep you need, and see the debt you’ve built up, your nightly average, and roughly how many nights of extra sleep it takes to clear.

Most adults need 7–9 hours. Use your own baseline.

Sleep debt is the running gap between the sleep you need and the sleep you get. You can’t repay a large debt in one long lie-in — a steady extra hour across several nights works better.

How the estimate is built

The calculator multiplies your nightly need by the number of nights to get the sleep you should have had, then subtracts what you actually slept. A positive figure is debt; a negative figure is a surplus. It also averages your nightly sleep, so you can see how far each typical night falls short.

To estimate recovery, it assumes you can bank a fixed number of extra hours on a good night — you set the amount — and divides the debt by that. It is deliberately conservative: real recovery is not perfectly linear, and very large debts clear more slowly than the arithmetic suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sleep debt?

Sleep debt is the running total of the difference between the sleep you need and the sleep you actually get. Need eight hours but sleep six, and you have added two hours of debt that night. It accumulates across nights, and a large enough debt shows up as slower reactions, weaker attention, and a flatter mood — even when a single night felt 'fine'.

Can I repay sleep debt with one long lie-in?

Only partly. A single long sleep clears some of the most recent debt, but research suggests a large, chronic debt does not fully reverse in one night — some deficits in attention and reaction time linger. A steady extra hour across several nights recovers more reliably than one heroic weekend sleep, which is why this tool estimates recovery across multiple nights.

How much sleep do I actually need?

Most adults need seven to nine hours, but the right figure is personal and fairly stable. A practical test: on a stretch with no alarm and no late nights, the hours you naturally settle into are close to your real need. Enter that as your nightly need rather than assuming eight for everyone.

Is this a medical assessment?

No. This is an educational estimate based on the hours you enter and a simple need-minus-actual model. It does not diagnose insomnia, sleep apnoea, or any sleep disorder. If you sleep enough hours but still wake unrefreshed, or you have persistent trouble sleeping, that is worth raising with a doctor.

Educational estimate only — not medical advice or a sleep-disorder diagnosis. Individual sleep need and recovery vary. For persistent sleep problems, speak to a doctor or sleep clinician.
